TikTok on the block, Duolingo at the top: unexpected rise in popularity

In January 2025, the US government banned the use of TikTok due to concerns about data security. This decision forced millions of users to look for alternative platforms for entertainment and learning. One of the main beneficiaries of this situation was language learning app Duolingo.

According to a report, Duolingo recorded a 216% increase in the number of US users learning Chinese after the ban on TikTok.

This shows that many users decided to use the freed up time to learn a new language, and Chinese became one of the most popular choices.

In its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Duolingo said, "We are happy to see such interest in language learning and welcome all new users!"

Context

The TikTok ban was part of a broader trend to rethink the use of foreign apps in the US. While some companies have been affected by these measures, others like Duolingo have been able to capitalise on the situation and attract new audiences.
