The TikTok and CapCut apps are no longer available in the US

On Saturday evening, 18 January, the TikTok app stopped working and was removed from the App Store and Google Play, just hours before the ban took effect on 19 January. Users who had previously installed the app are now seeing a pop-up window with the message: "Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable".

Here's What We Know

The notice also states that a law has been passed in the US to ban TikTok and users are temporarily unable to use the app. TikTok said that President Trump has expressed his willingness to work on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Users can close the app or go to the TikTok website for more information. Users can also download their data from the website.

ByteDance's popular video editing app, CapCut, is also no longer available in the US. After President Biden passed the "Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act," TikTok had six months to get rid of ByteDance's Chinese parent company. The company sued the Supreme Court, claiming its First Amendment rights had been violated, but the court ruled unanimously against the app.

As part of the ban, app shops must remove TikTok or be fined $5,000 for every US user who downloads the app.
