Jeep has announced a recall in the U.S. for 63,082 2017-2019 model year Cherokee vehicles due to a possible gearbox (Power Transfer Unit or PTU) malfunction. The problem is that the input shaft retaining ring may not be installed correctly, causing wear and damage to components. If this happens, the PTU can "disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in loss of drive power and/or loss of parking function."

Here's What We Know

Jeep has recorded 14 customer complaints, 1,064 warranty claims, 43 field reports and 55 other service records related to the issue in all markets. Despite the significant number of cases, the company has not reported any injuries or accidents related to the defect. It's worth noting that Jeep has already recalled the 2020 Cherokee for the 2014-2017 model years due to a similar problem.

Owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified in February 2025. In the meantime, it is advised to pay attention to unusual noises, vibrations or changes in ride quality and contact a service centre immediately if detected.
