Ukraine's Leopard 1A5 has shown high survivability, withstanding numerous attacks by Russian FPV drones thanks to upgrades and additional protection.

Here's What We Know

Russian drone operators released a video of an attack on a combat vehicle in a forested area. The tank withstood three hits to the frontal area, two to the left side and the stern, and then moved off. On the road, the vehicle received three more hits to the roof of the engine and transmission compartment, but continued to move. Only two further hits to the same area stopped the tank, probably causing it to catch fire.

The Ukrainian crew fought for the vehicle to the last, and it is likely that the tankers survived, as the main hits fell on compartments far from them.

The high resilience of the Leopard 1A5 is a significant achievement, given that this vehicle, created in the 1960s, originally had weak armour protection. In the Russian-Ukrainian war, the designers equipped the Leopards with dynamic protection, grilles and nets that neutralised shaped charge ammunition and significantly increased protection.

However, the tank did not have effective electronic warfare equipment that could have suppressed drone control in advance. Low availability of electronic warfare systems leads to significant losses of equipment on the front line.

Earlier it was reported that a Ukrainian M1A1SA Abrams also withstood six drone hits in the battles in the Kursk region. The crew remained unharmed due to the additional protection and design features of the tank.
