Geely has revealed its first methanol-powered racing car

China's Geely has unveiled its first methanol-powered racing car, which has been successfully tested in extreme winter conditions. The car is powered by Geely's in-house developed Aurobay-DHE20TDM engine, which is fully compatible with this alternative fuel and complies with China National VI-B emission standards. The engine has a thermal efficiency of over 46%, a compression ratio of 15:1 and outperforms its petrol counterparts.

Here's What We Know

Geely's methanol engine significantly reduces harmful emissions during operation compared to conventional motors. Geely notes that its new powertrain is reliable even in extreme cold and supports fast refuelling, making it a practical choice for endurance racing. Further testing on domestic tracks is planned for later this year.

Geely also announced the launch of the Green Methanol Racing Plan, aimed at promoting sustainable technology in motorsport and supporting the industry's transition to renewable energy. The company plans to introduce a fleet of methanol-powered racing cars in the new "Geely Super Cup PRO" series in 2026. Geely is also exploring the use of methanol in commercial vehicles by integrating methanol-powered engines with electric drivetrains.
