Volkswagen ID.7 won't make it to the US and Canada: the electric liftback has failed to live up to market realities

Volkswagen has officially dropped plans to sell the electric ID.7 in North America. It was previously scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2024, but the company postponed the debut last year, explaining that it needed "market-oriented solutions." It seems that the market has spoken unequivocally: according to The Car Guide, obtained from a Volkswagen representative in Canada, the ID.7 will not appear at all. Its authenticity was also confirmed by Automotive News.

Here's What We Know

The official reason for this decision is the difficult situation on the electric car market in the United States. However, this news is not a complete surprise, since Volkswagen removed ID.7 from its American website a fortnight ago.

Moreover, uncertainty is not only Volkswagen's problem. The electric car market in the US is in crisis due to political changes. Donald Trump's administration intends to remove the subsidies for electric cars that were provided under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Added to this is the pricing policy: the ID.7 was supposed to cost more than $50,000. Without government support, that makes the electric sedan even less attractive, especially since Americans are massively choosing crossovers and SUVs over sedans.

The Volkswagen ID.7 battery electric car will be available as a series production vehicle in a liftback body from 2023. A station wagon version of the model was also introduced in Europe in February 2024. The ID.7 Pro modification has a battery capacity of 82.0 kWh, while the ID.7 Pro S has a 91 kWh battery. The range in the WLTP cycle is respectively 621 kilometres (386 miles) and 702 kilometres (436 miles). Prices in Germany start at €53,995 (about $56,140).
