Nissan has launched a 10-year warranty in Australia, but there's a catch

If you buy a new Nissan in the US, you'll be given a warranty of three years or 36,000 miles (about 58,000 kilometres). In the UK, the warranty is also for three years, but the mileage limit is 60,000 miles (96,560 kilometres). But in Australia, Nissan has decided to outdo all competitors and offer a 10-year or 300,000 kilometres (~186,000 miles) warranty.

Here's What We Know

As is usually the case in such cases, there are additional requirements. Previously, Nissan Australia offered a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty. Now customers are given a chance to double the warranty period, but only if the car is serviced at official Nissan dealerships and the manufacturer's recommended service intervals are met.

A similar scheme is in place at Mitsubishi in Australia. The warranty of 10 years or 200,000 kilometres also works only on condition of regular servicing at official dealers.

Interestingly, Nissan's extended warranty is not just for new cars. Any Nissan bought after 1 January 2021 automatically qualifies for the extended warranty if all service inspections have been carried out at a dealer. But even if the owner has had the car serviced elsewhere, they can try to get back into the programme - to do so, they need to have a technical inspection at the dealer and perform a regular servicing.

Nissan also announced a programme of fixed prices for maintenance for some models. This is done to make it more favourable for customers to stay on the official service. The first five service inspections will cost for:

  • Qashqai, X-Trail, Juke, Pathfinder - AU$399 (~$240)
  • Patrol, Navara, Z - AU$499 (~$300)
  • Nissan Leaf - AU$349 (~$210)

Nissan Oceania director Michael Hi said that in a volatile market, the company wants to give customers confidence in their choices. The extended warranty is a way to build customer loyalty and keep them in Nissan's service network.
