Google Messages may get support for video calls via WhatsApp
Google is working on integration with WhatsApp in its Messages app. The new feature will allow users to make video calls via WhatsApp directly from the Messages interface.
Here's What We Know
This feature was discovered while analysing the latest version of the Google Messages APK.
Now, if you and your chat partner have WhatsApp, a new icon in the top right will appear in the form of a video camera. By clicking on it, you can start a video call via WhatsApp. However, this option is currently only available for one-on-one chats.
For group chats, or if the person you're chatting with doesn't use WhatsApp, the video call option in Google Messages will default to Google Meet. This will allow you to maintain the functionality of video conferencing even if one of the parties does not have WhatsApp.
It's not clear when this feature will be available to users, but it's being actively developed and is likely to be released in the next few weeks.
Given that the integration with WhatsApp is not yet complete, Google may add the option to choose between WhatsApp and Meet for video calls in future updates.
WhatsApp recently released a 25.2.3 update for iOS that fixes a serious privacy issue related to the "View Once" feature. The bug allowed users to view photos and videos that should have disappeared after one view. The issue was spotted by a security researcher, which led WhatsApp to acknowledge the bug and release a fix.
