Unexpected déjà vu: Google Play Store has found a bug in repeated app updates

A bug was discovered this weekend in the Google Play Store that is causing Android users to see repeated app updates.

Here's What We Know

The bug causes the Pending Downloads page to show updates for apps that have already been updated to the latest version. Normally, apps with actual pending updates show the update size and the date of the last update, but in the case of repeated updates, the update size is not shown.

Our colleagues at 9to5Google have noticed that their apps like Gboard, Google Messages, Pocket Casts and The Athletic show repeated available updates. These apps download a small amount of data - between 1MB and 2MB - but don't bring any changes as the latest version is already installed on the device.

The cause of this error is still unclear, but similar reports have appeared before, almost five years ago. Google hasn't commented on this yet, but it's likely that this error doesn't carry any glitches in updated apps or other malfunctions.
