BOE's OLED panel problems may force Apple to increase display orders from Samsung and LG

Apple may mandate Samsung to produce even more OLED panels for the iPhone due to quality issues at Chinese manufacturer BOE.

Here's What We Know

Samsung Display was the first company to start producing OLED panels for the iPhone. Over time, Apple started diverting some orders to LG Display and BOE. However, according to a report by OLED-Info, BOE is having trouble meeting Apple's quality standards for its LTPS OLED panels used in base model iPhones such as the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, 15 Plus, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

BOE has only managed to supply 7-8 million OLED panels since the beginning of 2024, which is significantly less than the 40 million that Apple has ordered. These problems will reportedly take at least six weeks to resolve. Display industry insiders believe that Apple will divert most of these orders to Samsung Display.

While Apple is also buying OLED panels from LG Display, the iPhone maker may not outsource additional orders to LG as LG is focused on producing LTPO OLED panels for the iPhone Pro models.

BOE has a long history of striving to supply OLED displays to Apple, but has faced persistent quality issues. These problems may be on the arm of Samsung, which will only benefit financially in this situation, but Apple's final decision in this situation is not yet known.
