GM recalls GMC Sierra due to grille parts falling off

General Motors has announced a recall of 70,768 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks due to the risk of the top of the grille detaching while driving.

Here's What We Know

The problem only affects models with chrome grilles. It turns out that all eight fasteners of this decorative part can crack, causing it to start to dangle and then - fall off. As a dubious bonus, drivers would get a spectacular surprise on the motorway, and those travelling behind would get an unwanted "gift".

Notifications of such incidents began to come in as early as early 2024, but General Motors didn't see a "massive defect" at the time. However, in May, the problem was detailed on Reddit, and it prompted the company to reopen the investigation in December. As a result, GM recorded 1,225 complaints, four of which involved crashes. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

For now, General Motors is "working out a solution." Owners on Reddit claim that the part is only sold with the grille assembly. Dealers have already been instructed to suspend sales of new and used models that fall under the recall. Official notification to owners will begin on 24 March.
