A photo of a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet with a C version AIM-120 AMRAAM missile has been posted online, indicating that Kyiv has been supplied with more advanced air-to-air weapons.

Here's What We Know

In the video footage of the Ukrainian F-16's overflight, three additional fuel tanks, electronic warfare units and two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles are visible. In addition, an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile is mounted on one of the side mounts. The rudder shape belongs to the C version, which features diamond-shaped front and rear control surfaces.

This rudder layout was introduced in 1996 to ensure compatibility with the internal weapon bays of stealth aircraft such as the F-22. This is the first confirmation that Ukraine has this particular AMRAAM modification, which significantly enhances the F-16's air combat capabilities.

Another important detail is the AIM-9X missiles, which can also be seen in the photo. Previously, Ukrainian F-16s were fitted with older AIM-9L or AIM-9M modifications, but the newer AIM-9X has better manoeuvrability and an improved homing system.

The aircraft is also equipped with an ECIPS/CJS container developed by Terma and Leonardo. It contains a powerful digital electronic warfare station capable of jamming enemy radars and anti-aircraft missile guidance systems. The container is also equipped with a missile warning station that can detect missiles launched at the aircraft.
