Denmark has already handed over most of the promised F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of its military assistance. This was announced by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov after the 26th meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defence in the Ramstein format.

The rest of the combat aircraft will be delivered to the Ukrainian Air Force in the near future. In December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the delivery of the second batch of F-16s. The planes from the first batch have already been used to destroy Russian missiles during shelling of Ukraine.

As of November, the Ukrainian Air Force had six Danish F-16s. Denmark has pledged to provide Ukraine with a total of 19 aircraft upgraded under the Mid-Life Update (MLU) programme. The transfer will take place in three stages.

As part of the modernisation, Danish F-16s have undergone major repairs and received an improved AN/APG-66(V)2 airborne radar.

Denmark, along with the Netherlands, leads an international fighter jet coalition that helps Ukrainian pilots and technicians learn to fly the F-16. Meanwhile, Denmark is gradually replacing its F-16s with new fifth-generation F-35A fighters, with the next batch of three aircraft arriving in January 2025.
