Perplexity has introduced a major update to its free chatbot and added Deep Research.

Here's What We Know

This new feature allows chatbots to search the web and analyse complex queries step by step.

Previously, chatbots such as OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others used a fixed set of documents for training, which limited their knowledge to the information available at the time of training. This often led to outdated answers, especially when users asked questions about recent events or new topics. In addition, these AI models had difficulty answering complex queries that required the integration and analysis of diverse data.

Deep Research changes Perplexity AI's approach by focusing on accurate and thoughtful answers rather than quick ones. Now, the chatbot has access to relevant information in real time, which allows it to find the most up-to-date data to solve complex queries. As it spends more time on analysis and research, Perplexity can provide much more accurate answers, even to PhD-level questions.

The main advantage of Deep Research is the ability of Perplexity AI to successfully pass complex tests such as SimpleQA and Humanity's Last Exam with over 90% accuracy.

What distinguishes Perplexity from OpenAI is that the Deep Research feature is available for free to all users. To access it, users just need to switch from Auto mode to Deep Research before submitting a query. Free users have a limit on the number of queries per day, while paid users have unlimited access.

The Deep Research feature is already available on Perplexity's website and will be added to the company's mobile apps in the near future.
