Swedish studio Liquid Swords, founded by Just Cause creator Christopher Sundberg from Avalanche Studios, has been forced to reduce its staff to "adapt to the current business environment". The number of dismissed employees is not disclosed.

Here's What We Know

The studio, founded in 2020, is working on its debut project - "a story-driven open-world noir game developed on Unreal Engine 5".

In a statement, the studio said that development of the game is ongoing, but that the cuts are necessary to ensure "long-term stability".

"I promised our employees and shareholders success and to build a studio that would redefine game development with a small team of experts and a sustainable operating model," Sundberg said.

"While we have achieved a great deal, changing market conditions have prevented us from achieving success in the timeframe we set out to. As a result, we must part ways with talented people who have been instrumental in our journey. This is incredibly difficult, but we remain committed to our vision and will continue to work on our intellectual property and first game with a dedicated team."

According to the studio's website, Liquid Swords planned to expand to 100 employees by early 2024, but it is not known whether this goal was achieved.

These expansion plans were announced after NetEase invested an undisclosed amount in the studio to help realise its vision of a "quality-centric approach to game development".
