The Romanian parliament has passed a bill that allows shooting down drones and missiles that enter the country's airspace.

Here's What We Know

According to Digi, the new law expands control measures over the use of national airspace. The Ministry of Defence's initiative was prompted by a legislative loophole that previously prevented the Romanian armed forces from shooting down enemy UAVs without declaring a state of emergency.

The draft law was supported by 196 MPs, with 99 opposed and two abstentions. The final decision is to be made by the Senate, after which the document will be signed by acting President Ilia Bolozhan.

The draft law stipulates that Russian drones that unauthorisedly enter Romanian airspace can be destroyed. In addition, NATO forces from other countries will also have the right to join these measures under collective defence agreements.

Prior to the adoption of the document, the Romanian Ministry of Defence reported that on 13 February, the wreckage of the Geranium drones used by Russia to attack Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube was found on the country's territory. According to the ministry, both drones were carrying explosive charges that were destroyed when they hit the ground. The country's infrastructure was not damaged.
