At CES 2025, Samsung, along with Google, unveiled a new spatial sound format called Eclipsa Audio that will compete with Dolby Atmos. Today, the company revealed more details about the new sound technology.

Here's What We Know

The format is based on the Alliance for Open Media (AOM) Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF). Eclipsa Audio delivers immersive audio through three-dimensional spatial audio, automatically optimising sound and adapting sound position, spatial reflections and other audio elements depending on the type of device.

It can deliver spatial audio through cheaper TVs, soundbars and even smartphones that have stereo speakers. The audio can be delivered from the front, back, top and bottom, creating a sense of depth. Because it uses an open-source framework, it can be used without any additional fees or royalties, making it cheaper to produce the content and audio equipment needed to play Eclipsa Audio.

Content creators will soon be able to start using Eclipsa Audio in their videos and upload them to YouTube, which will support Eclipsa Audio. All Samsung TVs and soundbars that will be released this year will feature Eclipsa Audio technology, from the affordable Crystal UHD TVs to the flagship 8K Neo QLED TVs.

What is AOM?

AOM (Alliance for Open Media) is a consortium of technology companies that work together to create and promote open standards for media. It includes companies such as Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Google, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, Nvidia, Samsung and Tencent. AOM's goal is to create innovative media formats that can be freely used to improve user experience and reduce licence fee costs.
