Microsoft has unveiled a new generative AI model, Muse, which the company claims has shown "a deep understanding of the 3D world and game physics, as well as the ability to respond to player actions."

Here's What We Know

The game Bleeding Edge from Ninja Theory Studios was used to develop Muse.

Microsoft emphasises that Muse can generate ideas for games, which will speed up their development and simplify the tasks of game designers. However, the main thing the Muse AI is supposed to be used for in the future is adapting "any old game to modern platforms", and it won't require a lot of effort or remakes/remasters.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer commented enthusiastically on Muse:

Muse is one of those things that really inspires me. Can you imagine a world where AI can adapt a game to any platform based solely on gameplay data and video footage?

Microsoft anticipated the negative reaction of the community and emphasised that using Muse does not replace human creativity and imagination and does not exclude human participation in game development, but only "expands the possibilities".

Here's how Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews commented on the development of the new AI:

It's not about using AI to create content, it's about creating workflows and approaches that allow our team to do more, go further, make changes faster, generate ideas faster, and bring them into tangible form. [...] That way our talented team can focus on an important feature in games - human creativity.
