Insider says Apple is already testing a new C2 modem for future iPhone models

Apple has started testing its second-generation C2 modem for future iPhone models, according to an insider.

Here's What We Know

According to a private account on X, the C2 modem has received the C4020 identifier, which indicates its existence. However, the insider did not provide any additional details.

The leaker asked that the media not refer to his private account.

Apple has officially confirmed that the development of new iPhone chips begins several years before their release. Therefore, it is not surprising that the company is already working on the C2 modem. The new modem is expected to provide faster and more reliable 5G connectivity, as well as be more energy efficient.

According to Apple, the C1 modem installed in the iPhone 16e is the most efficient iPhone modem to date. This allows the smartphone to have the longest battery life of any 6.1-inch iPhone, including the more expensive iPhone 16.

Apple's first modem is expected to be slower than the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem used in other iPhones.

In an interview, Apple's chief chip designer Johnny Sroggy said that the C1 modem is just "the beginning", so the C2 modem will be the next chapter in the story. He emphasised that the company plans to constantly improve this technology with each new generation.

Apple also confirmed that it plans to use its own cellular modems in many products in the coming years.

It is expected that the new C1 modem will be installed in the iPhone 17 Air, which will allow Apple to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm, which currently supplies modems for other iPhone models. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Qualcomm's share of the iPhone modem market could drop to 20% next year.
