Sweden buys Tridon and RBS 70 air defence systems for Ukraine for $113 million

The Swedish government has purchased RBS 70 and Tridon air defence systems for Ukraine worth $113 million.

Here's What We Know

According to Omni, these systems will improve air defence capabilities, especially against attack drones and cruise missiles. In addition, Sweden will provide Ukraine with anti-aircraft missiles of the same type as those already in use at the front, as well as additional anti-aircraft weapons.

The Defence Forces already have RBS 70 systems, and the Tridon Mk.2 purchased is a new development of BAE Systems AB (the Swedish branch of the British BAE Systems), introduced in June 2024.

The new anti-aircraft gun system uses the Bofors 40 Mk.4 40mm gun with a 100-round feed system. It is mounted on a 6×6 Scania truck, which ensures mobility on public roads. The module can be mounted on other trucks that meet the load capacity requirements.

The Tridon Mk.2 can engage air targets at a range of up to 13 km, and its Bofors 3P programmable warheads provide high accuracy. The maximum rate of fire is 300 rounds per minute. The optical station above the module allows firing day, night and in bad weather conditions.

As for the RBS 70, the system is designed to destroy low-flying targets at a range of 5000-8000 metres and altitudes of 3000-5000 metres. It is worth noting that it is operated by three servicemen: an operator, a loader and a commander. The deployment time is 45 seconds, and reloading takes less than 5 seconds.

The missile is guided by a laser beam, which ensures high accuracy and insensitivity to thermal and dipole traps. The maximum speed is 2000 km/h.
