Trump's Iron Dome programme renamed in the US: now it's the Golden Dome
The US strategic missile defence programme initiated by the Donald Trump administration has officially changed its name from The Iron Dome for America to The Golden Dome for America.
Here's What We Know
One of Trump's first decisions after his inauguration was to create a national missile defence system. Initially, the programme was called The Iron Dome for America, but now it has been officially renamed The Golden Dome for America.
A number of American publications drew attention to this, as US Secretary of Defence Pete Hagel first called the programme the "Golden Dome or Iron Dome", and then the fact of the renaming was found in official documentation.
The reasons for the name change are not commented on, but Iron Dome is a registered trademark of the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, which could become a legal problem for the United States. In addition, the name is associated exclusively with the Israeli air defence system, while the US programme has nothing to do with it.
According to Defence News, the new name could also create political difficulties, as the programme involves huge budgetary expenditures that could be a subject of debate in Washington.
