The anti-corruption song El Mal from the film by Emilia Perez won the Oscar for Best Original Song
French composers Clément Ducol and Camille have won an Oscar for their song El Mal from the musical Emilia Perez. This is their first Academy Award, following their success at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
Here's What We Know
The song El Mal, co-written with director Jacques Audiard, is aimed at exposing corruption. In her speech, Camille emphasised the importance of art as a tool for change:
"We wrote El Mal as a song against corruption. We hope it reminds us of the role of music and art as a force for good and progress in the world."
El Mal beat out such competitors as The Journey by Diane Warren, Elton John's Never Too Late, Like A Bird by Abraham Alexander and another song by Emilia Perez, Mi Camino.
Interestingly, Ducol and Camille were nominated in three categories at once, including Best Original Soundtrack. They noted that the music in the film is not just an accompaniment, but the basis of the story:
The music in this film is the script. It is the story itself.
Despite the controversial reaction to its portrayal of Mexican culture, Emilia Perez became one of the most discussed films of the year. The film received 13 Oscar nominations, more than any other contender this year.
As a reminder, Zoe Saldana won her first Oscar for her role in Emilia Perez.
