Nissan GT-R completes 18-year era: orders officially closed

The legendary Nissan GT-R is going down in history. The Japanese carmaker has officially closed the order intake for the iconic supercar, signalling the end of its 18-year production run.

Here's What We Know

The GT-R has been gradually disappearing from global markets since as early as 2021. It was first taken off sale in Europe due to new noise regulations, and then in Australia due to stricter safety standards. Production for North America ended back in October 2023.

Nissan's Japanese website recently reported, "The Nissan GT-R has received many orders and their intake has been finalised in line with planned production." Exactly how many cars remain to be assembled is unknown, but it is no longer possible to place a new order.

The GT-R (R35) debuted in 2007 and was Japan's answer to the Corvette. In 18 years, it received minimal updates, went through two facelifts, but stayed true to its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine. The entry-level version had 471bhp, while the latest GT-R Nismo develops up to 600bhp.

What's next? There's no official successor yet, but Nissan's design director has hinted that a new GT-R could arrive by 2030. Whether it will be electric, hybrid or remain with an internal combustion engine is still a mystery.
