Canadian prime ministerial candidate Chrystia Freeland has said that the country should strengthen relations with the United Kingdom to protect itself from a possible threat from Donald Trump.

Here's What We Know

According to her, the US president may pose a threat to Canadian sovereignty due to his rhetoric about the country's possible accession as the 51st state. Freeland stressed that to ensure security, Canada should expand cooperation with its European NATO allies.

"I will make sure that France and the United Kingdom, who have nuclear weapons, will be there," she said.

In response, Donald Trump sharply criticised Freeland, calling her "crazy" and "terrible for the country".

Freeland's political opponents also condemned her position. In particular, Conservative candidate Danielle Smith said: "The United States is our friend and security ally."

Earlier it was reported that the new US administration is proposing to integrate Canada as the 51st state at a high level, and Trump calls the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "the governor of Canada".

In addition to confrontation with Canada and Mexico, the Trump administration has also strained relations with European allies, including Denmark. The reason for this was the US intention to integrate Greenland, which caused a sharp reaction from European leaders.
