Ubisoft has decided to restart the development of the multiplayer shooter Far Cry Maverick, which was originally planned as part of Far Cry 7. Now, the studio is focusing on the creation of the main game of the series, codenamed Blackbird, which is expected to be released in 2026.

Here's What We Know

Far Cry Maverick was originally conceived as a multiplayer mode for Far Cry 7, but eventually turned into a separate game. The game was supposed to take place in the harsh environment of Alaska, where players would fight against wildlife, soldiers, and other participants.

However, in December 2024, Ubisoft decided to transfer some of the developers from Maverick to Far Cry 7 (Blackbird) to ensure the timely progress of the main project. Maverick will now be developed by Ubisoft Sherbrooke.

Far Cry 7, codenamed Blackbird, also promises to change the traditional formula of the series. The game's plot is built around a real-time timer of 24 hours, during which the protagonist has to save his family from a cult.

Testing of the game has already begun, and the first feedback from testers was positive, noting a "fresh" approach to gameplay.

The decision to relaunch Maverick is related to Ubisoft's attempts to optimise development processes amid financial difficulties. The company is going through difficult times: studio closures, staff reductions, and project cancellations have become a common practice in recent years.
