The recently announced Blades of Fire challenges traditional RPG progression by focusing on the player's skills and equipment rather than the traditional stat-based upgrades. In an interview for the Epic Games Store blog, lead game designer Joan Am at explained how the game's progression system differs from typical RPG mechanics.

Here's What We Know

Instead of allowing the protagonist Aran de Lira to become an all-powerful magical creature, the developers aim to reward players through the creation of weapons and combat skills. Instead of equipping weapons that throw fireballs, players will gain power by crafting weapons and wielding them effectively. Amat emphasised that the goal is to make every action meaningful rather than relying on flashy visuals to convey power.

The heart of Blades of Fire is the forge, where players can combine materials and forge scrolls to create weapons from seven different weapon families, offering an almost limitless number of combinations. The design philosophy draws inspiration from historical weaponry, focusing on elements such as balance, grip and edge alignment rather than on measures of dexterity, strength or intelligence.

Where To Play

The game will be available on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC.
