The German-Swiss Liebherr Group is developing a huge 12-cylinder diesel engine, which will be officially unveiled in April at the Munich construction machinery trade fair (BAUMA 2025). The new D9612 engine weighs 2.4 tonnes, has a displacement of 27 litres and produces up to 1,300 hp.

What is known about the Liebherr D9612?

This 2.3 tonne monster is over two metres long, has twelve pistons as thick as your hand and turns its crankshaft at a nominal speed of just 1,800 rpm. Even at 1400 rpm, it delivers a gigantic 5,374 Nm of torque to the drive. Two impressive Twin-Scroll turbochargers help generate this power.

Liebherr V12 D9612 engine specifications:

  • Configuration: V12
  • Displacement: 27 litres
  • Power: 565 kW (768 hp) / 950 kW (1,292 hp)
  • Maximum torque: 5,374 Nm at 1,400 rpm
  • Compression ratio: 15:1
  • Dimensions (L/W/H): 2,117 mm / 1,361 mm / 1,355 mm
  • dry weight: 2,350kg
  • Emission standards: EPA Tier 0 / EPA Tier 2 / EPA Tier 4f / IMO II

The D9612 is built for demanding conditions in construction, agriculture and industry. The engine has a powerful water pump, closed crankcase ventilation system and ultra-fine fibre oil filter. Liebherr's LiDIA diagnostic device is used to continuously monitor the engine's condition.

If required, the V12 engine can be customised to meet specific customer needs. For this purpose, Liebherr offers external fuel and oil filters, several positions for the oil filler neck and oil level dipstick, or even different oil sump designs for different installation positions. The D9612 can be equipped with optional air conditioning units, multiple air and water connections, cold start kits and additional fan drives to meet different climatic requirements.

The Liebherr V12 D9612 will officially premiere at Bauma 2025 from 7 to 13 April.
