Ford F-150 OTA update has sped up the electric pickup's charging time

Ford is releasing an over-the-air (OTA) software update for the F-150 Lightning electric pickups for the 2022-2023 model years, allowing them to accept more current during fast charging.

What's changed.

  • The maximum charging current has been raised from 450A to 500A
  • Improved charging curve, allowing you to hold high capacity longer
  • Charging from 10% to 80% of battery capacity takes 5 minutes less than before

How does it work?

The first versions of the Ford F-150 Lightning could take up to 170 kW for 7 minutes, after which power would drop dramatically to 125 kW.

Now:

  • The charging system can hold power over 160 kW for up to 10 minutes
  • Charging power decreases smoothly
  • Charging from 10 to 80 per cent at a 350 kW station now takes about 40 minutes instead of the previous 45 minutes

But there's a nuance. The 2024 model year F-150 Lightning already had these improvements from the factory. That means owners of earlier versions had to wait two years to get the upgrade, which could be a little disappointing.

How to get the update?

The new software version is already rolling out to most 2022-2023 Ford F-150 Lightning models and is installed automatically via OTA.
