Palantir Technologies Inc. has started delivering Titan mobile combat stations to the US Army under a $178 million contract.

Here's What We Know

This is the first time that a company known for its data analytics software has been a major defence contractor.

Titan (Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node) was developed in collaboration with Anduril Industries, Northrop Grumman and other companies. The system integrates Palantir artificial intelligence, which collects data from satellites and ground sensors, cleans it and provides the military with operational information to hit targets faster and more accurately.

The station itself is a military truck with a trailer equipped with servers, communication systems and large liquid crystal screens. Inside, there are folding work tables, temperature control for the crew and equipment. The trailer includes a backup power supply and a "space kit" for direct communication with satellites.

Palantir beat out RTX Corp. (formerly Raytheon) for the contract, and the mobile stations have already been delivered on time and on budget. In the coming weeks, Titan will be tested at Army facilities outside of California to verify reliability in extreme conditions.
