LEGO plans to create games based on different franchises, not just licence them to other studios
LEGO is preparing for a new stage in its history by announcing its intention to start developing video games internally. The company's CEO, Niels Christiansen, shared the plans, emphasising the importance of creating games that are consistent with the LEGO brand.
Here's What We Know
Christiansen noted that LEGO is committed to providing a diverse experience for children of all ages, in both digital and physical formats.
He said: "We can confidently say that under the LEGO brand we can cover experiences for children of all ages. Developing games internally is something we are working on."
Currently, most existing LEGO games are created by external studios under licence agreements. For example, LEGO is working with TT Games on popular games based on such franchises as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones.
LEGO also continues to collaborate with Epic Games on the LEGO Fortnite project and with 2K on the LEGO 2K Drive racing game, which was the first in a series of sports games. According to rumours, TT Games is also currently working on a new LEGO game that could be released in 2025 or 2026.
Christiansen stressed that in-house development does not mean refusing to license to other studios. It can create a balance between in-house projects and already established partnerships.
