Poland plans to purchase another 5,000 Starlink terminals. This was announced by the Minister of Digitalisation of Poland Krzysztof Gawkowski in an interview with Radio ZET

Here's What We Know

According to him, Warsaw has already handed over about 30,000 such devices to Ukraine, which are actively used on its territory.

"We are buying Starlink in order to provide Internet in Ukraine, as it is of strategic importance. The Ukrainian frontline would have collapsed without communication, and it is beneficial for Poland to keep it as far away from Warsaw as possible," Gawkowski said. He added that the new terminals will help both the military and civilians stay connected.

At the same time, the European Union is in talks with four satellite internet operators about a possible replacement for Starlink for the Ukrainian Defence Forces. Among the potential suppliers are Luxembourg's SES, Spain's Hisdesat, Britain's Viasat, and the French-British Eutelsat/OneWeb.

According to European Commission spokesperson Thomas Rainier, Ukraine is interested in switching to alternative communication systems, including Govsatcom, the EU's unified network of national government satellite capacities.

The IRIS² satellite group is also being considered, but its launch is expected only in the 2030s. Govsatcom should reach initial operational capability this year, but only as a temporary solution until IRIS² is implemented.
