Ford electric cars can now route to Tesla Supercharger stations using Apple Maps on CarPlay
Owners of Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E electric cars in North America have a useful new feature: Apple Maps on CarPlay can now plot a route to Tesla Supercharger charging stations, taking into account the necessary stops for charging.
Here's What We Know
Owners of the above models don't need to update their car's software - an iPhone with iOS 17 or higher is sufficient. Once the driver sets up a priority network of charging stations (e.g. Tesla Supercharger) in Apple Maps, the app will automatically take these points into account when plotting a route.
Another useful feature - Apple Maps will show a warning if a certain charging station requires a NACS / CCS adapter. The thing is, current versions of the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E electric cars come from the factory with a CCS1 connector, whereas the vast majority of Tesla Superchargers have connectors of their own standard (NACS). So while Ford electric cars can be charged at some Supercharger stations in the U.S. and Canada, a charging adapter is still required.
But there's a nuisance. When using Apple Maps on CarPlay, neither the Mustang Mach-E nor the F-150 Lightning will pre-prepare the battery for fast charging before arriving at a fast charger. This is despite the car knowing that a charge is expected ahead.
Android smartphone owners will get this feature when using Google Maps on Android Auto. This means iPhone users will still have to use the car's in-built navigation system to select a DC fast charger and plot a route to it if they want the battery to be warmed up to the right temperature before plugging in.
