Ted Price from Insomniac Games believes that changing genres in games has become a challenge due to rising costs, but it is still necessary to experiment
Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price, who is going to leave the company, noted in an interview that active genre change has become much more difficult due to the growing scale and development costs.
Here's What We Know
In the past, Insomniac actively changed genres with each new generation of consoles, but now, according to Price, "games have become really big." This means that companies must carefully plan the budget and scope of projects. Insomniac has been able to maintain high productivity even in the PS4 and PS5 era, while many other studios, such as Naughty Dog, have slowed down significantly due to increased development time and costs.
Price emphasised:
"Today, companies have to think more clearly about how we can become more efficient in our operations while still meeting the needs of players."
Despite the difficulties, Price believes that changing genres is still possible and that experimentation is necessary.
I think that every developer who has released a few games should consider, if they are passionate about what they do, switching gears and doing something new
Price gave examples of other companies that have successfully changed genres. For example, Creative Assembly moved from strategy to first-person in Alien Isolation. This confirms that changes can lead to success if implemented correctly.
