Lockheed Martin creates a mock-up of the Russian Pantsir-S1 air defence system
The American company Lockheed Martin has developed a model of the Russian Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system. According to ArmyRecognition, the mock-up is mounted on the platform of a Peterbilt 320 truck, which is usually used for garbage trucks. Because of this, the product has already received the nickname Peter Pantsir.
Here's What We Know
The mock-up is designed to test the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod system, a set of sensors installed on F-16 and F-18 fighters to identify and classify targets. Such mock-ups are created to assess the effectiveness of aircraft guidance systems and analyse enemy tactics.
The United States is actively studying foreign combat systems, including air defence, to develop effective countermeasures. For example, in 2023, the United States spotted models of Russian air defence systems being transported by rail, including two copies of the Tor-M1 air defence system, a model of the S-300PS launcher and the 5N63S command post.
There is a possibility that the Pantsir-S1 model will be used by OPFOR units that simulate the actions of a potential enemy during US Army exercises. Such mock-ups can also be used to train combat aircraft pilots and drone operators to detect enemy air defences or as decoys to mislead the enemy.
