Cummins has unveiled its first petrol engine

The American company Cummins is known as a manufacturer of diesel engines. In more than a century of history, the company has supplied engines for the widest range of equipment - from pickup trucks, trucks and locomotives to industrial generators and ships. But until now, Cummins had never produced a petrol engine. The B6.7 Octane is the first of its kind.

Here's What We Know

Development of this engine began several years ago, but only now has it officially entered the medium-duty commercial vehicle market. The B6.7 Octane is based on the diesel six-cylinder B6.7 and produces up to 300 hp with a maximum torque of 895 Nm (660 lb-ft). There will also be 200 hp versions with 813 Nm (600 lb-ft) of torque.

Cummins says the engine runs on 87 octane petrol (equivalent to 91-92 RON in Europe), providing diesel-like performance and reliability, but without the need for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (also known as AdBlue).

The B6.7 Octane is compliant with the CARB and EPA's advanced eco-standards, which are scheduled to take effect in 2027. Fuel consumption figures are not yet available, but the company says the new engine is 10 per cent more efficient than its petrol counterparts.

The first to receive the engine will be Kenworth Class 5-7 vehicles (models T180-T480), which are used primarily as conventional trucks rather than for towing trailers. Whether the B6.7 Octane will appear in other vehicles is not yet known.
