Stargate for OpenAI: one of the largest data centres for AI is being built in Texas

The first data centre for the OpenAI Stargate infrastructure project is under construction in Abilene, Texas. It is expected to have the capacity to host 400,000 advanced Nvidia AI chips, making it one of the largest AI computing clusters in the world.

Here's What We Know

The construction cost of the complex is estimated at $100 billion, and the first phase is scheduled to be completed in mid-2026.

The centre, located in Abilene, Texas, will have a capacity of up to 1.2 gigawatts. The Stargate project was announced at an event at the White House in January 2024 with the participation of OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. This facility will allow OpenAI to develop more powerful artificial intelligence models.

The centre will become part of a network of about 10 facilities across the country. Oracle (which is one of the largest software developers and technology solution providers) has already agreed to use the full capacity of this centre for the Stargate project.

According to preliminary data, OpenAI plans to use about 1 gigawatt of capacity. It is known that with the new facilities, the company will be able to ensure the scalability of its artificial intelligence technologies.

It is worth mentioning that while OpenAI is developing its infrastructure project, other tech giants are also actively increasing their capacity to work with Nvidia chips. For instance, Elon Musk's xAI has signed a $5 billion deal to build a supercomputer in Memphis, and Meta plans to provide its infrastructure with 600,000 Nvidia H100 chips.
