GTA veteran calls for a smarter approach to game development as we are in a situation where supply exceeds demand
Leslie Benzies, the former president of Rockstar North and one of the key developers of the Grand Theft Auto series, has expressed concern about the current state of the gaming industry. In an interview with Edge magazine, he noted that an oversupply of games on the market and a limited number of players lead to studio closures and mass layoffs.
Here's What We Know
Benzis stressed that although the number of games is growing, the hours per day and the number of players remain unchanged. This creates a situation where supply exceeds demand, which negatively affects the industry. He urged developers to analyse the needs of the audience more closely and create projects that are really interesting to players.
And recently, Helldivers 2 director Johan Pilestedt said that safe bets could be a "death sentence" for studios, calling for risk and originality in game development.
However, in any case, the industry and company executives need to look for new ways, as the closure of a dozen studios due to stupid decisions is not good for anyone.
