TikTok to stay in the US for another 75 days
US President Donald Trump has announced that he has signed an executive order giving TikTok an additional 75 days to continue operating in the US as his administration continues negotiations to sell the US part of the social network.
Here's What We Know
TikTok was banned in the US after the USA PATRIOT Act came into effect on 19 January, but Trump ordered the Department of Justice not to enforce the law for 75 days. The deadline was set to expire on 5 April, but now TikTok has been given an additional two and a half months.
Trump said on Truth Social that his administration has made "great progress" in negotiations to "save" TikTok, but there is still much work to be done. His team is rumoured to be considering offers from companies such as Oracle and Perplexity, as well as individuals such as Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast), Shark Tank host Kevin O'Leary, Employer.com founder Jesse Tinsley and billionaire Frank McCourt. This week, even Amazon made an offer.
TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has said it has no intention of selling TikTok, and China has also not agreed to a deal, but Trump believes tariffs could be leverage for negotiations. the possibility that Trump may seek to strike a deal that involves several US investors licensing TikTok's algorithm from ByteDance, but whether this meets the requirements of the law is still unknown.
