Microsoft has shown Quake 2 generated by artificial intelligence and angered gamers who did not appreciate such progress at all

We wrote that Microsoft released a demo of a single Quake II level that was completely generated by Muse AI. Nevertheless, this technological demo video caused a strong and mostly negative reaction among social media users.

Here's What We Know

Microsoft launched this web-based version of Quake 2 on its website to demonstrate the capabilities of Muse, but insists that it "does not intend to fully recreate the actual experience of playing the original Quake 2".

While some users acknowledge the technical achievement behind the demo, the majority of social media reacted negatively. A significant number of responses to The Game Awards host Jeff Kaley's post on Twitter criticised the use of generative AI.

"We created a program that roughly and inaccurately represents how you would play Quake 2 right now," one comment reads.

Or there's another relevant comment: "This requires all the same hardware you could use to actually play Quake 2, but it uses a billion times more power."

"This is absolutely disgusting and spits on the work of every developer," reads another, more harsh comment.

In fact, Jeff's tweet contains a whole collection of heated comments on this topic. You can read it here.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the company plans to use its new generative AI mode in the video game catalogue. Commenting on Muse in February, Nadella compared it to the "wow" moment he experienced when he first saw other generative AI models such as ChatGPT.

As with most creative industries, generative AI has become a hot topic in video games, with many expressing concern that it will lead to job losses and large-scale plagiarism.
