While the battle royale genre continues to hold the attention of millions of players, Ubisoft seems to have decided to try its hand at the genre again. According to Insider Gaming, the French giant is developing a new Battle Royale game codenamed 'Scout', which, according to sources, draws inspiration from the hugely successful Apex Legends.

Here's What We Know

The game has reportedly been in development for several years and will feature "very similar" characters to those in Apex Legends, including its own interpretations of familiar fighters.

One source familiar with the project said: "I think the goal is to take advantage of the drop in Apex player numbers and the fact that they [Ubisoft's senior management] think there's room for another Battle Royale in the market."

Interestingly, this project seems to go against Ubisoft's own research, whose internal analyst team recently asked the question of "what comes after Battle Royale", citing the declining number of players in various battle royale games, including Apex Legends.

EA itself has also admitted that Apex Legends is no longer showing the desired financial results, and CEO Andrew Wilson has announced an upcoming "major update" called "Apex Legends 2.0" that could attract players. Whether EA will be able to restore the franchise to its former glory remains to be seen, but at least in the eyes of Ubisoft, there is still room for an Apex Legends-style Battle Royale on the market.

It is worth recalling that this is not the first attempt of Ubisoft to gain a foothold in the battle royale market. In 2020, the company launched Hyperscape, but closed the project about 18 months after its release. According to insider information, since then, Ubisoft has cancelled about a dozen other Battle Royale titles at various stages of development for one reason or another.
