New VW Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo: almost GTI, but in SUV bodywork

Volkswagen has unveiled a new generation of the Tiguan crossover for the US market. The most powerful version - Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo - received a serious increase in power, improved equipment and a more sporty character.

Here's What We Know

The main technical feature of the flagship version is the EA888 turbo engine - familiar from many VW Group models. In the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo, this 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine develops 268 hp (199 kW). Other versions of the model will receive less powerful modifications.

Standard equipment includes an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive. In addition, the model is equipped with 20-inch wheels and is available in new colours: Avocado Green Pearl, Sandstone Uni and Monterey Blue Pearl.

Outside the U.S., this Volkswagen model is already sold under the name Tayron. Dimensions are 4,684 mm (184.4 inches) long, 1,854 mm (73 inches) wide and 1,685 mm (66.3 inches) high with a wheelbase of 2,791 mm (109.9 inches). The exterior features VW's characteristic styling with LED stripes on the front and rear, updated lighting and sporty accents.

The interior has also received noticeable updates. The SEL R-Line Turbo version features real wood trim elements, Varenna leather upholstery, a new multimedia system with a 15-inch screen and a 10.25-inch digital dashboard. The equipment list includes tri-zone climate control and a multimedia system with wireless smartphone connectivity.

The front seats are 12-way adjustable and feature massage, heating and ventilation. Ventilation is also available for the rear seats.

Prices and sales start dates for the new Volkswagen Tiguan in the U.S. have not yet been announced.
