This week, a Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane will land at the Royal New Zealand Air Force's Ohakea base to deliver the main components of a new training facility for P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft.

Here's What We Know

The newly built Te Whare Toroa training centre for the 5th Squadron will feature a full-fledged P-8A flight simulator that will allow training in conditions as close to real life as possible. The project is aimed at improving the level of training of crew and technical personnel, reducing training risks and saving resources during the operation of the aircraft.

According to Sarah Minson, an official from the Ministry of Defence, the simulator will significantly enhance the combat readiness of the New Zealand Air Force by providing a safe, controlled and cost-effective training environment.

The complex is part of a wider US$2.3 billion contract that covers the purchase of four P-8A Poseidon aircraft, their ground infrastructure, mission systems, equipment and spares. The aircraft are already conducting aerial reconnaissance operations, monitoring compliance with UN sanctions, and have participated in rescue missions in the Pacific Ocean.
