Hyundai's new hybrid system improves fuel efficiency by 45 per cent

Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled its next-generation hybrid powertrain, debuting on the Palisade SUV. The company promises significant gains in performance and fuel efficiency, as well as a wide range of configuration options.

The main feature is a new powertrain with two integrated electric motors. One is responsible for engine starting, regeneration and acceleration assistance, while the second is responsible for basic driving and braking. Hyundai believes that using two electric units instead of one increases power, improves ride smoothness, and reduces noise and vibration.

This powertrain can be combined with various petrol engines. Hyundai has hinted at a wide power range, from around 100 hp (74 kW) to 300+ hp (221 kW). The first production version pairs the hybrid drivetrain with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, which will be followed by a system with a 1.6-litre motor.

The list of changes includes optimised in-cylinder circulation, a new fuel system and pistons, as well as a duty cycle optimised for hybrids with minimal energy loss. The starter and generator are integrated into the transmission, which also improves efficiency.

In the Palisade, the 2.5 T-GDi hybrid version develops 334 hp (246 kW) and 460 N-m, which is 19% more powerful and 9% more tractive than just a petrol motor of this displacement. At the same time, fuel economy is improved by 45 per cent.

The 1.6 T-GDi-based hybrid will make its debut in a new, as yet unnamed mid-size SUV. Hyundai promises a 13N-m increase in torque and a fuel consumption reduction of more than 4 per cent.

The e-AWD all-wheel drive system with an electric motor on the rear axle was also unveiled, which improves off-road capability and dynamics.

Hyundai Motor plans to introduce new hybrid powertrains across all its brands, from compact Hyundai and Kia models to the premium Genesis.
