Clash of the RPG Titans: Oblivion Remaster vs Clair Obscur come out in the same week - what should a fantasy fan choose?
This week, fans of large-scale fantasy RPGs received not one, but two potential hits at once. On the one hand, there was an unexpected release of the long-awaited remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. On the other hand, the ambitious Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which promises an exciting journey in the fight against the mysterious Artist. And while the release of two games of the same genre in the same week is not too rare, the similarity between these two projects caused both joy and some surprise in the RPG community, and did not leave Clair Obscur's publisher, Kepler Interactive, untouched.
Here's What We Know
In a humorous post on Twitter, Kepler shared an edited image of Clair Obscur characters entering Oblivion's Oblivion Gate, accompanied by the text "omg its like barbenheimer" - an obvious reference to the simultaneous release of the Barbie and Oppenheimer films in 2023.
It's nice to see such a good-natured response from Kepler, as some fans seem to be a little confused by the simultaneous release of two games that are so similar. Unlike Barbie and Oppenheimer, which targeted very different audiences, Clair Obscur and Oblivion seem to have a lot of overlap among fantasy RPG fans. This has led to many asking which game to choose first, or if they should skip one of them altogether.
Some players have also criticised Microsoft, which owns Oblivion developer Bethesda and has been actively supporting Clair Obscur since its announcement at the Xbox Showcase last year. While Microsoft probably didn't control the release date of Clair Obscur, it has been known since January, and Xbox probably knew about it even earlier. The company could have moved Oblivion's release to an earlier or later date to give both games some breathing room.
However, it's not all bad. In the end, RPG fans are getting two promising games at once, both of which will be available on Game Pass, as well as on PlayStation and PC, and both of which look set to provide hours of exciting adventure. Why not just play them both?
