Nintendo is stunned by the demand for Switch 2 in Japan: millions will be left without a console at launch
It seems that the excitement around the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan has reached an incredible scale, and Nintendo itself was forced to admit that it will not be able to meet the demand for the console at the launch. The company's president Shuntar Furukawa personally announced the amazing news on his social media.
Here's What We Know
According to Furukawa, 2.2 million people took part in the drawing for the right to purchase Switch 2 through My Nintendo Store. The Nintendo president acknowledged that this figure "far exceeds expectations" and "far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered" at the time of launch.
Nintendo has already informed its Japanese fans that a "significant number of customers" will not be able to receive Switch 2 at the launch. All those who have already applied for the console will be automatically included in the second lottery, but it will undoubtedly result in an undisclosed number of applications not being granted.
"We deeply apologise for not being able to meet your expectations despite our previous preparations," Furukawa wrote.
Nintendo says that as a result of the overwhelming demand, the company is "ramping up" Switch 2 production, and pre-orders through other Japanese retailers will open tomorrow if fans want to try their luck there.
"Through our cooperation with retailers, we will continue to supply consoles and work hard to get as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles into your hands as possible," Furukawa added. "We plan to continue to produce and ship a significant number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future. We apologise for the delay in our ability to meet your expectations and appreciate your understanding."
Although Nintendo initially promised ample stock for the launch, it immediately sounded like a fairy tale.
Overseas, the Switch 2 launch has already proved to be less than smooth sailing in North America, where Nintendo had to take the ongoing US-China trade war into account when pricing the launch. In the US, the Switch 2 will still go on sale on 5 June, along with the rest of the world, although prices for its accessories have already increased. Demand for Nintendo's new console is extremely high around the world, and the company will have to make significant efforts to satisfy everyone.
