Sucker Punch and Sony surprised players by unveiling a new Ghost of Yōtei trailer and announcing the release date. In the role of Atsu, players will embark on a bloody journey through Ezo (the old name of Hokkaido) to take revenge on the Yōtei Six, who brutally murdered her family and left them for dead. And now the authors have told us more about the world of the game.

Here's What We Know

Interestingly, the overall structure of the game is significantly different from its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima. Atsu will independently determine the order of elimination of the members of the Yotei Six, exploring the diverse and complex locations of Ezo. In a conversation with Variety, creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox spoke about the influence of the Edo period on the game's world design.

"This is the most open game we've ever made," Fox said. "One of the greatest joys is just getting lost. Let your curiosity guide you through the landscape. We see this as a sacred moment that we want to give to players so that they can feel fully present inside Hokkaido, or Ezo as it was called in the days when our game was set. Ezo is a character in its own right, filled with hidden secrets and an anthology of stories."

Connell added:

"It's just an incredibly wild and natural world. There's an opportunity here to tell a slightly wilder, more rural version of this story than if it was set in a big city. There are so many biomes to bring to life and so many majestic and beautiful places to inspire. There's no way we could fit everything in, so we were able to choose the most beautiful locations and bring them to life for our players."

This "wild" approach is also evident in the gameplay: it looks like players will have a wolf companion to fight alongside Atsu. While many details are yet to be revealed, Atsu will also be able to relax with non-combat activities familiar to players of Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Yōtei is scheduled for release on 2 October exclusively for PS5 with PS5 Pro support from day one. Pre-orders will start on 2 May.
