Apple has decided to abandon the use of a new super scratch-resistant anti-reflective coating on the iPhone 17 Pro displays, which it planned for this year's models. This was reported by a reliable insider who shared the information with MacRumors.

Here's What We Know

Last year, rumours surfaced that Apple was working on a new display coating that would be much more scratch-resistant than Ceramic Shield. However, since then, there have been no new details about the coating, and now it's clear that it has failed.

The coating was only supposed to be introduced on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models, which would have made them the first iPhones with an anti-reflective display. However, Apple faced problems at the stage of scaling up the coating process. The process proved to be too slow for the millions of devices the company produces, and as a result, the anti-reflective coating was excluded from the plans for this year.

Currently, all iPhone models are equipped with a fingerprint-repellent coating, but Apple has not yet focused on anti-reflective technology for its smartphones. For Macs and iPad Pro, the company uses a nano-textured display that reduces glare, but this technology has not yet been adapted for the iPhone.

Samsung has introduced a new Gorilla Glass Armour display technology for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which reduces glare by 75% and improves contrast even in bright light.

Perhaps Apple will return to the idea of using anti-reflective coatings in future models when the technological process becomes more stable and scalable.
