The power of nostalgia: Revenge of the Sith returns to the big screen with a record-breaking result
It seems that Star Wars fans really wanted to relive the birth of Darth Vader on the big screen. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Revenge of the Sith was re-released last weekend and has already managed to become the second highest-grossing re-release in the history of cinema.
Here's What We Know
The film is officially known as Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, has exceeded all expectations, grossing a staggering $25 million in US cinemas alone, with the global box office adding another $17 million. Only James Cameron's Titanic in 2012, with its incredible $350 million, was able to gross more than this among re-releases.
It's not every day that you see a 20-year-old film outperforming new releases.
With these new figures, the film's global gross is now approaching the $900 million mark. Despite all the controversy surrounding the prequels at the time of their release, most Star Wars fans would agree that Revenge of the Sith is one of the best films in the saga.
Another interesting conclusion from last weekend's box office results is the growing popularity of re-releases among audiences. Recently, Coraline in Horrorland and Interstellar have each grossed over $50 million in their re-release campaigns.
If you want to stay in the Star Wars world a little longer, you can already watch the first episodes of Andor season 2 on Disney Plus. The franchise will also return to the big screen with the release of The Mandalorian and Grog starring Pedro Pascal next year.
Alternatively, if you missed the film in theatres, Revenge of the Sith is also available to watch on Disney Plus.
