Attention, there are serious spoilers for the second season of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II!

The second episode of the hit HBO series The Last of Us became one of the most shocking moments of this year's television. Viewers who hadn't played the game or didn't know about Joel's tragic fate were more than surprised by his brutal murder as an act of revenge. The same scene took place in the game five years ago, so fans were anxiously waiting for the series to pull the trigger. However, episode 3 allowed us to show what was not possible in the game: Jackson got time to mourn Joel.

Here's What We Know

In the game, after Joel's death, Ellie immediately starts planning to find the culprits, continuing the circle of revenge. In episode 3, the series showed how the town mourns Joel, feeling his loss, and gave both Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay) scenes to express their grief.

"There's this really beautiful scene where Tommy comes in and he has to clean up his brother's body," Luna said during a documentary about the making of the episode, "I thought about that scene a lot. You know, I call it a wake for a friend. It was a very long night of shooting that scene."

This episode also shows us the interior of Joel's house for the first time, so an entire set had to be built. The exterior of the house has been used before, but now we see it covered in flowers and memorials as Ellie walks through the rooms alone, feeling the emptiness left by Joel.

"Ellie's mood at the beginning of episode 3 is dark. It's like the stages of grief, isn't it? I think she's so broken and numb and then she becomes incredibly angry," Ramsay added. "Shooting the scenes at Joel's house was sad, really sad. There were a few takes where I was actually crying into his jacket."

Now we are waiting for the premiere of episode 4 on 4 May.
