No sooner has the surprise of Ghost of Yōtei's unexpected release date announcement died down than the PlayStation 5 exclusive is back in the spotlight, this time with fresh details from the developers. In Famitsu's latest interview with directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, some interesting new details about the upcoming game were revealed.

Here's What We Know

As we already know, the plot revolves around the desire of the protagonist Atsu to take revenge on the brutal gang known as the Yotei Six, which destroyed her family. However, the game will not lead players through a linear chain of story missions to eliminate the main villains. According to the developers, players will be able to choose the order in which they will hunt down the members of the Iota Six. It is not yet known how much freedom there will be in achieving this goal, but Fox emphasises that player choice is a key element of the game's design.

"In terms of open-world adventure, Ghost of Yōtei has the most freedom and the biggest map of any open-world game we've ever made," Fox said.

The interview also touched on Sucker Punch's approach to respectfully portraying Japan as a game setting. As you may recall, Ghost of Tsushima received a lot of praise for its portrayal of the region and its culture, and unsurprisingly, the team wants to continue on this path with the sequel.

"We've had input from various consultants on how to portray the Ainu people and their culture at the time," Fox explains, "As with the previous game, we've also done a lot of research on Japanese culture and integrated it into this project.

Given the high quality of Ghost of Tsushima, we have high hopes for Ghost of Yōtei - and everything we've heard so far sounds very promising. And we'll be able to play it from 2 October.
